The inner part of the tooth (known as the pulp) contains the nerve and blood supply to teeth. When this becomes inflamed or infected, a root canal becomes a treatment option. This is often caused by deep decay, a cracked tooth, or dental trauma.
The procedure involves removing the pulp, thoroughly cleaning the inside of the tooth, and sealing it to prevent further infection. The treatment is completed under local anaesthetic and feels very similar to having a longer filling. The treatment may be completed over 1 or 2 visits, depending on the initial cause of the root canal. In cases of more significant infection, a second appointment is often needed to ensure the tooth is fully cleaned and healing properly.
After a root canal, most teeth will need to be restored with a crown. This is because the tooth may be weakened due to decay or the loss of internal structure, making it more prone to cracking or breaking. A crown not only helps to strengthen and protect the tooth but also seals the root canal to ensure the success and long-term stability of your treatment.

The main treatment session takes about one and a half hours. This may sound daunting but the procedure is carried out in a way which allows you to relax your jaw for most of that time. For more complex or re-treatment cases, a second, shorter visit is sometimes required.
The cost of root canal treatment varies depending on the patient but typically you can expect to pay from £795 plus the cost of a consultation appointment. Before any work is carried out, we will always discuss treatment options and the likelihood of success as well as answer any questions you may have.
After the root filling has been completed, you will need to have the tooth permanently filled or crowned in order to ensure the long-term survival of the tooth.
